Leading By Example

Yesterday we had an all school assembly and I was doing my best to observe my new class of 4th graders. One thing became very apparent to me about them. They watch to see what the adults do before they take action. I then began to wonder if other kids were doing the same and I realized they were. So, based on my observation this morning, I have come to realize that the phrase "Do as I say, not as I do." is garbage. Kids will rarely ever do what you say if you aren't also doing it yourself.
This has implications for all kinds of things. Let me give you some practical examples; eating broccoli, brushing your teeth twice a day for two minutes, picking up after yourself, and being courteous. The more we act out these things, the more our kids will be willing to act them out. This rule also applies to our spiritual lives. Make sure that your kids see you acting out your faith. Let your kids see you reading your bible. Let them see you getting down on your knees to pray. Invite them to join you in these activities so they grow in their understanding of the importance of these spiritual disciplines.
Your kids will always look to your actions before embarking on their own. You are their leaders and you have a responsibility to live the life you want them to have. If you want your kids to grow in the Lord, you must show them how you do it.
